It's back, but at a new location down Howard Street... <br/> <br/>The 9th annual How Weird Street Faire is on Sunday May 4th from 11:11am to 5:55 pm in San Francisco. <br/> <br/>This year, the How Weird Street Faire will encompass Howard Street between 1st Street and New Montgomery, 2nd Street between Mission and Howard, and all four blocks of Minna St. and Natoma St. off of 2nd Street. There will be an urban crop circle at the center intersection of Howard and 2nd Streets, at 37°47'12.4"N, 122°23'53.7"W. <br/> <br/>The main entrances are on Howard Street &amp; 1st Street and on Howard Street &amp; New Montgomery (with bike parking). This is two blocks from the Montgomery BART and MUNI stop. <br/> <br/>The day is open to all ages, with requested donation of $10 (or $5 in costume, with kids free). <br/> <br/>The How Weird Street Faire is an experiment in creating peace, and a benefit for the non-profit World Peace Through Technology Organization. For its ninth year, this fun-filled event is moving to a new location near downtown San Francisco. This year there will be seven city blocks filled with art and celebration, food and vendors from around the world selling unique and creative wares, and non-profit organizations to educate and inspire. And there will be performance artists and thousands of people in colorful costumes dancing in the streets. <br/> <br/>Music stages representing some of the best electronic music in the world will be found throughout the faire. This year will feature nine stages of music during the day, each stage an exercise in peace through collaborations of collectives and artists; including CCC, Lowpro Lounge, Tantra, An-ten-nae, Muti Music, El Circo, Raindance, Koinonea, Cyberset, Sunset, Om Records, Space Cowboys, Groove Garden, Mystic Beat Lounge, Earthdance, Surya Dub, Non Stop Bhangra, Electric Vardo, Yoga Tai Chi Collective, Symbiosis, Opel, Deep End, Opulent Temple, Supperclub, and more. <br/> <br/>For the first time this year, the How Weird Street Faire will incorporate a full evening program into the festivities with "How Weird At Night". At 6pm, the faire moves indoors to several prime locations located immediately within the faire site footprint, and one only two blocks away. Stages from the faire will be hosting music and other performances at venues include Club NV, Temple, Supperclub, 111 Minna Gallery, and more. The evening costs only $10 for the first venue, and $5 for each additional venue. The evening venues are 21 and over only, going from 6 pm to 2 am. Full details will be posted on the website, including additional venues, schedules, and a map of all the activities. <br/> <br/>This year, there will be a special Community Action Zone during the day inside San Francisco’s greenest nightclub Temple, located at 540 Howard Street (within the faire site). Technology that fosters peace and sustainability will be exhibited, and there will be talks and interactive workshops. Come inside to be inspired from Noon to 4:30 pm. <br/> <br/>The How Weird Street Faire continues to support sustainable actions and education. This year, the faire is maximizing recycling and composting, aiming for zero waste. The faire utilizes many resource-saving and earth-sparing tools and tactics. All food vendor supplies are biodegradable, keeping it simple and compostable, with paper cups, paper plates, and napkins. All of the power for the faire is run on biodiesel, thanks to Green Sector. And there will be environmentally-themed carnival games provided by the Sustainable Living Roadshow. Electronics recycling is available through Green Citizen on 2nd and Howard Street (within the faire site). Green Mary will again be providing a waste diversion and eco-education campaign, featuring information on how you can make your life waste-free. Remember a Reggae in the Park, the North Beach Festival (a 52 year tradition in SF)? Gone only a memory… The North Beach Jazz Festival Is next to be killed by the city unless people take action. <br/> <br/>Seen free music at a city park? Washington Square Park, Hippie Hill, Sharon Meadow, Speedway Meadow, Stern Grove? Do you attend events like Decompression, SF Pride, How Weird Street Faire, Haight Ashbury Street Fair, Comedy Day, Love Parade? These events could be next… The feasibility of these events are at political risk….Unless we take action. <br/> <br/>The problem is that many free events rely on alcohol and food sales to cover the massive costs of throwing such events. The Parks and Recreation commission has started a scary precedent to deny alcohol permits for free events. Surely there are more rowdy drunks at any Giants or 49er game. Doubt the city wants to ban those alcohol sales permits. Free live music does not create a out of control drunken crowd. Why single out free music events? <br/> <br/>This city’s mismanagement of funds <br/>Facing a budget shortfall the city is slashing services, raising permit fees and over charging promoters for events in city parks and beyond. Festivals are seen as a financial burden for the city not an asset. Loss of alcohol revenue combined with the unchecked increasing fee/permit hikes will result in a death blow to many more events. <br/> <br/>Many of the events in San Francisco are put on by public organizations not the city. San Francisco spends less on the arts than many of the great cultural cities in the world. Events bring well-needed fun and revenue (and city tax revenue) to the merchants and musicians that make this city so great. The merchants are not complaining, on festival days they see a 70%-80% increase in business. Festival attendees fill the restaurants, buy from the many small business and add to the fun this city always welcomes. If the city can’t support such events financially it should at least support them politically. However, The city behavior as of late has been very hostile to groups putting on events. <br/> <br/>Last year's Love Parade hired 40 police officers at a cost of $35,000 for a one day event! <br/> <br/>The How Weird Street Faire organizers received a surprise bill from the police for almost triple previous year's total. <br/> <br/>Mercenary Productions experienced a jump of $7,500 for the rental of Piers 30/32 for a free concert and fireworks show and spent three days less than last year on the same site. <br/> <br/>The Haight Ashbury Street Fair (a 29 year tradition in SF) almost got corralled into a beer garden. Locking out those under 21. <br/> <br/>Burning Man's Fire Arts Festival is looking at a bill from San Francisco with two unexpected zeroes at the end of it. <br/> <br/>Bay to Breakers race — which has always been more about partying than running — was hit with a crackdown on alcohol and music. <br/> <br/>The North Beach Festival (different than NB Jazz Festival) was denied an alcohol sales permit that it relied on for funding its free music. Thus ending this 52-year tradition in San Francisco. <br/> <br/>Music festivals and other events are an asset to the city and should be valued as such. Festivals are community-building events and MUST be supported by the city politicians. No problems have ever resulted from alcohol sales at this event. <br/> <br/>· This year, the SF Police Department is pushing a “beer garden” policy for outdoor events, forcing organizers to create small fenced in 21+ areas. This policy limits access for those under 21, including children with their parents. <br/> <br/>· Because of the access limitations created by beer gardens, the SF Recreation and Parks Operations Committee voted on May 3rd to deny NBJF the ability to sell alcohol in Washington Square Park. <br/> <br/>· The committee has stated that they plan on denying the NBJF permit's appeal on Tuesday, May 30 . This denial threatens NBJF since revenue from beverage sales pay for the majority of festival expenses. Without this revenue, NBJF will go bankrupt and San Francisco will lose yet another music tradition. I've been working How Weird a few years now and one of my jobs is to mind the staff and office base camp and folks bags and personal items, and crew food etc.. This is a job I take quite seriously as everyone works very hard (12 hours non stop) and they need to know their stuff is safe so they can enjoy their work. THey also need to know the food area is safe. <br/> <br/>During clean up last night, I had this girl come into the base and stand right next to the bags and boxes of weird tshirts and medical team equipment bags, wanting to take a piss there and then, yeah right there, no joke. Of course I said "no way use the toilet, people's bags and personal stuff are here". She said she has this excuse and that excuse, a whole list of excuses bla bla bla. We told her she can use the back stage toilet, yet she's still standing there trying to make out that she has the god given right to piss there and then. I cracked (i'd been on the job 12 hours already) and yelled that just the thought is too disgusting, (wouldn't you?). I stopped there and had somebody else deal with it who got her into the toilet. The chick wasn't in a wheel chair or had any physical disabilities, no walking stick or brace, nor was even falling over drunk. <br/> <br/>Where the base camp is located is also the front door of the person's with disabilities center. I absolutely could not condone somebody pissing on thier doorstep not to mention the worker's bags, food, and medical equipment bags on my watch, especilly with a toilet only ten feet away.. ANyway she did her business in the loo, then comes out and her and her boyfriend start yellling abuse and curses at me. I am like "right back at you" and gave them the finger back too. <br/> <br/>She was wearing long pants with I think soft toys sewn to them, her boyfriend was wearing an orange jumpsuit with black spots. She had long burgandy colord hair, I think he had brown or red hair with a moustash and rough shaven. If you know who I am talking about please tell them that I still think they are disgusting and that they shouldn't come to our festival anymore. Announcing the 6th annual How Weird Street Faire on Sunday May 1, 2005. San Francisco's Howard Street becomes How Weird Street as we fill four city blocks with fun, entertainment, and education. The How Weird Street Faire is centered at Howard and 12th Streets, in the SOMA district of San Francisco. This year will feature a Peace Pavilion in the center, a place to relax, connect, and learn about fostering peace. <br/> <br/>The How Weird Street Faire has evolved into an exciting San Francisco tradition, showcasing some of the most vibrant and creative art, music, and performances in the country. But it is much more than just a good time, it is an experiment in peace events, and the annual fundraiser for the non-profit World Peace Through Technology Organization. By bringing people together, we hope to create an atmosphere where people can find common interests and appreciation of art and music that stretches across cultural boundaries. Even the stages themselves are an example of peace, with different groups and collectives collaborating together on each stage, and all the stages collaborating in a festival of cooperation. This is not a protest, but rather a celebration of community, highlighting our unique creative individuality and the magic that occurs when we work together. By focusing on our shared interests, we can make connections between people possible, and can better understand each other. Our similarities are far greater than our differences. <br/> <br/>The How Weird Street Faire will again feature non-profits and community groups to educate and inspire. A unique addition to the Faire will be the Mobile Educational Gallery (MEG) which will feature a digital art gallery and film festival with the theme, Solutions for a Better World. Using the latest communication technologies, we will connect children in schools and homes around the world using the latest innovations in video conferencing.
